Laser Sights Anyone?

Laser sights are a staple for self-defense, or at least I consider them one. There’s nothing wrong with iron sights but, in low light or situations where you need to shoot quickly, they can be next to useless. 

I’d like to see anyone hiding behind a corner or crouching behind the sofa have the time (and courage) to poke their head out and line up the sights. I’d use a laser sight any day in those situations.

But wait, won’t a laser beam give away your position?  While you can see this in the movies, this is just a myth. Only the two ends of the laser are visible, not the entire beam. The only exception is when there’s smoke or fog. 

Most people won’t face a perpetrator with the cinematic effect of a smoking building. So, the beam is the least of our worries. Lasers aren’t easy to trace back to the source and, before the bad guy (or girl) figures it out, you would have shot them already.

Red Light… Green Light

Red light or green light, which color laser is better? Let’s get back to basic physics. 

Light consists of wavelengths. The colors we see are different wavelengths of light reflected in our eyes. The visible spectrum ranges from about 400 (violet) to 750 (dark red) nanometers (nm). 

The retina in our eyes is covered by millions of light-sensitive cells shaped like rods and cones. These cells process the light and tell our brains what we see. The rods and cones do not process all wavelengths of light equally. Cones are more sensitive to wavelengths around 555 nm, while rods are more sensitive to the 500nm range. 

And that is important to our question of red or green. We see 620nm to 750nm as red while we see wavelengths around 550 nm as green. As the 550 of green is closer to the sensitive sweet spot of both rods and cones it is a lot easier for us to see green.

So green lasers are more visible than red ones, especially in bright light environments. However, they are more expensive as making them requires more components. 

Knowing what you’ll use your laser sight for helps you pick the right color. If you’re after affordability and will be using your sights at short ranges or indoors, then go for red. 

However, if you’re planning to use it in broad daylight at long ranges, then paying the extra for a green laser will serve you better.

Viridian E-Series Red Laser Sight

First on this list is the Viridian E-Series laser sight. Specifically made for the Taurus G2c, this red laser sight fits like a glove on the trigger guard. It is made of high-strength polymer and is just the right size, so it doesn’t make your EDC gun bulky. Another good thing to add is that it’s lightweight — weighing only 0.78 of an ounce with the battery on. 

Installing it isn’t difficult. Even someone who doesn’t know much about lasers can get it up and running in less than 5 minutes. It comes with a Viridian CR1/3N battery and two Allen wrenches for adjusting windage and elevation. 

The E-series generates a bright dot that’s impressively bright for a red laser. It’s easy to follow and allows for quicker target acquisition. It utilizes a 650 nm class 3R laser with about 5 mW power output. This laser can stretch up to one mile at night and can reach up to 25 yards during the day. 

This laser favors both right- and left-handed users as it operates with an ambidextrous on/off button. There’s no need to hold down the button. Press it once and you’re good to go. With constant use, the battery life runs at around 6 hours. One good battery-saving feature is that it shuts off automatically after 5 minutes.

A few users have reported soldering problems in the battery compartment. This has led to connection issues. It seems to be in only a very few cases. It also seems like Viridian’s customer service is quick to sort you out in case it happens to you.

Verdict

Shooting with the Viridian E-Series laser sight is a great experience. It holds zero and it’s easy to install and use.

This is a laser sight for the average user. It does what it needs to do because you should expect nothing less from a reputable company like Viridian. It is covered by a seven-year warranty as well. All things considered, this is easily our top Taurus G2c laser on this list. Viridian has added green lasers to its E-series lineup but has not released one for the Taurus G2c as of this writing.

Crimson Trace Rail Master Universal Laser Sight

A list of the best laser sights wouldn’t be complete without a Crimson Trace product on it. If you’re after a premium laser sight for your G2c, then they got just the thing. 

The CMR-206 Rail Master is a universal laser sight. It mounts on just about everything, including the Taurus G2c. You don’t have to worry about using it outdoors since it features a bright class 3R green laser (5mW peak, 515-532 nm).

This is a small, compact laser sight that attaches below the barrel of the G2c. It runs on a 1/3N Lithium battery, which is included in the package. With constant use, the laser runs for about 2 hours. It has a 5-minute auto shut-off feature that can help in prolonging that. 

You’ll have no problem installing the CMR-206 Rail Master as it comes with everything you’ll need. It includes mounting rails, screws, a battery, and even some cleaning swabs for the laser. The laser was already sighted at 50 feet from the factory. Still, windage and elevation are adjustable so that you can adjust them according to your liking. Overall, this laser sight weighs 3.2 ounces, which is just enough to not change the overall feel of the pistol.

One feature I like most about the CMR-2016 is its ambidextrous tap-on/tap-off controls. In a stressful situation, what you need is instant help, and a quick laser offers the closest thing to that. While being downright accurate, it also makes for quicker target acquisition.

Verdict

The Crimson Trace Rail Master Universal Laser Sight is a premium product that also comes at a premium price. However, that’s to be expected since the CMR-206 flashes a green laser. 

At over $250, it nearly costs as much as the Taurus G2c pistol itself. Still, if it’s home defense we’re talking about, it pays to invest in a reliable laser. If you’re willing to pay extra for the quality, then this laser sight is for you.

ArmaLaser TR23 Red Laser Sight

The ArmaLaser TR23 Laser Sight is custom made for the Taurus G2c. Mounted on the trigger guard, it stands out with the True-Touch Activation feature. But how does that work?

You don’t have to fumble for the switch or do anything. It simply turns on as soon as you grip the pistol. This is all due to the gold plate sensor below the trigger guard. As soon as your finger makes contact with the sensor, the laser turns on instantly. Grip and glow. 

The laser sight comes with all the tools you need to install it. It is made of polymer material that blends easily with the Taurus grip frame. Its bright 635nm Class 3R red laser is visible up to 50 feet in daylight. Also, it operates on a lithium CR1/3N battery and can run up to 6 hours. 

You can adjust the windage and elevation of this sight. If you want to turn it off completely, you can find the main on/off switch at the bottom. Depending on preference, you can switch between steady and pulse modes.

When installed properly, you shouldn’t have any issue with the dot not being on point. The factory preset only needs very minimal adjustment or even none at all. The only drawback that most users have with this one is finding a suitable holster. If it helps, ArmaLaser has a set of TR-compatible holsters for that.

Verdict

I should say that the ArmaLaser TR23 Red Laser Sight is one of my favorites on this list. It is easy to spot and the activation system is a big plus. The flood of five-star reviews from satisfied customers says a lot about its performance. If red is not your thing, then go for TR23G, the green laser version of this line. However, it costs more at almost $150.

GGD Micro Green Dot Rechargeable Subcompact Laser Sight

The Green Dot Laser from Gun Gear Depot is the most budget-friendly entry on this list. 

It might not be as slim and refind as the rest of the laser sights on this list, but you get a lot for less than $60. It got a bright 532nm green laser, which is great considering the price. This one gives you a good distance even on a sunny day. 

From the box, the package includes the laser itself, two Allen keys for adjustment, and a charger. It holds zero, with a little more than a 100-yard range. The runtime is around 1 hour, depending on use. 

Installing the GGD laser shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. You can adjust it with the included Allen wrenches. It is a great fit for the Taurus G2c and attaches just the right distance from the trigger. Reaching the switches quickly feels natural. Plus, it’s ambidextrous, so operating it is easy. 

The profile of this laser sight fits well on a compact gun like the Taurus G2c. It’s housed in a durable metal material, with a total weight of around 3.5 ounces. Although not remarkably heavy, it’s hard to ignore that there’s something attached to your pistol.

Verdict

I’d gladly have the GGD green laser sight because of the price. But not only that. Again, one remarkable thing about it is that you don’t have to worry about spending on batteries. That’s something that’s convenient and practical. 

It doesn’t come with a warranty, but that’s something to be expected given the price point. It’s a terrific buy for the casual user on a budget. It does what it’s designed to do, and that’s why it’s the best budget option on this list.

Ade Advanced Optics HG54G Green Laser Sight

The Ade Advanced Optics HG54G laser is another affordable green laser sight. It sports a 510-535nm class 3R laser that ensures visibility even on a bright day. Also, it runs in both steady and strobe modes. 

This is an ultra-compact laser sight that fits well on a compact gun like the Taurus G2c. With the battery included, it only weighs 1.13 pounds, so it’s easy to forget that you have it on — well, unless when needed. The full dimensions in inches are 1.79 x 1.06 x 0.85. It’s about the same size as a 25 cent coin.

Aside from the size, another good thing about this laser sight is the design. It’s smooth and very easy to keep in the holster should you use it for concealed carry. The two spring-loaded pins allow you to position the laser sight properly in the rail slot. It helps keep the laser in position against recoil. However, some users say a block would keep it from sliding better. 

It runs on a CR1/3N battery, which is included in the package, with a 1-hour runtime. The battery compartment is located at the bottom, so there’s no need to remove the laser sight when changing the battery. It’s a good way of keeping the adjustments in place. There are also other tools included, such as Allen wrenches, for adjustments. 

When it comes to action, this small add-on holds zero like a champ. Compared to iron sights, you can notice the quicker target acquisition with this on board. It has ambidextrous switches, much like the tap on/off controls of the Crimson Trace Rail Master.

Some users had issues with the laser sight sliding off. Although I haven’t experienced it myself, it helps to check the attachment regularly. Besides, nothing is totally invincible from recoil anyway.

Verdict

The Ade Advanced Optics green laser offers about the same quality as other more well-known brands. Remarkably small and compact, that makes it a great advantage for CCW owners. That’s also compatible with a wide range of holsters without snagging too much. You’ll get this green laser at a reasonable price.

Streamlight 69290 TLR-6 Flashlight With Red Laser

If you want a Taurus G2c laser light combo, then the Streamlight 69290 TLR-6 is what you need. It comes in two colors, black, and earth brown.

You might be thinking that this one is designed for Glocks. Yes, that’s true but with minor adjustments, it can be at home easily with your Taurus pistol.

With polymer housing, the Streamlight 69290 TLR-6 has a C4 LED light and a 640-660nm red laser. It runs in three modes: LED/laser, LED only, and laser only. The illuminator provides a good amount of light at 100 lumens. It runs on a lithium battery, which is also included in the box. With the light on, the runtime is about 1 to 2 hours.

The red laser light is adjustable and is exceptional at holding zero. It stays dead accurate even after hundreds of rounds. It doesn’t get lost in the halo of the light, which is also a good thing. You can either use your trigger finger or the support hand to turn it on, plus it’s ambidextrous.

The TLR-6 has an overall weight of 1.12 ounces. In inches, it measures 2.2 x 2.2 x 2.2, which makes it small and compact for a laser-light combo.

With installation, it’s not a quick-attach kind of add-on. You need to split it in half first and position it on the rail and trigger guard. The Taurus G2c has a thinner trigger guard, so you need to do some magic there. It helps to start with the screws near the trigger guard to ensure proper fit and avoid movement. Some Taurus G2c owners tried a bit of clear silicone on both sides of the trigger guard to make it even snugger. As they say, to each his own.

If you decide to get this one, make sure you also consider checking a compatible holster. With a wrong fit, drawing can make the battery lose, and we don’t want that.

Verdict

Streamlight’s TLR-6 provides two-in-one safety protection. This is especially ideal for self-defense when you have to protect your family at night. If you’re looking for a reliable Taurus G2c laser light combo, this one won’t let you down. 

With a price below $100, you have a trusty laser and light. It’s a suitable pair you should consider adding in a pistol or two.

A Bit About the Bull

We all know that Taurus Arms, as it is commonly known here in the United States, has its roots in  Brazil where it is known as Taurus Armas. It is the firearm division of the big manufacturing company Forjas Taurus (Taurus Forge). It got into the game in 1941 and produced its first revolver. Taurus then got into exports and made ties with other well-known gun makers. One of which is Bangor Punta, Smith & Wesson’s parent company. 

The conglomerate Bangor Punta bought more than 80 percent of Forjas Taurus in the early 1960s. This partnership meant open communication in all things firearms-related. The two companies shared information on gun design and manufacturing. With that, it’s safe to say that for a long time, Taurus has had some S&W touch on their firearms. 

Another familiar name on Taurus’s history lane is Beretta. The Italian company produced firearms for the Brazilian government before. When the contract ended, Taurus Armas entered the scene and purchased Beretta’s manufacturing plant. It not only included the building but also the tools and drawings for some pistol designs. 

In 1977, Forjas Taurus was purchased back from Bangor Punta and went up from there. Now, Taurus Holdings has different companies under its umbrella. In 1988, it came closer to the American market by establishing Taurus USA, officially known as Taurus International Manufacturing Incorporated. 

Taurus is known for its budget-friendly guns but has had its difficulties. They had manufacturing issues that even resulted in a recall in 2015. Since then, many have been skeptical about Taurus. But that doesn’t mean it can’t get better, right? 

Taurus has learned its lessons, something we’ve seen in its newer pistol lineup. One favorite I have is the G2c series. Not only is it ideal for concealed carry, but it’s also a great gun for the money.

An Overview of Taurus G2c

The Taurus G2c series offers 9mm pistols with either 10- or 12-round capacity. There are also choices for the slide, frame, and barrel finish. For those who want to load with heavier cartridges, there’s a 10-round G2c that is chambered in 40 S&W.

Taurus G2c Specs

Taurus definitely stepped up their game with this one, and many gun enthusiasts are impressed with it. Undeniably, it shares a lot of features with the PT111 Millennium Pro, minus the key-lock security system. Instead, it has four times the safety with a striker block, trigger safety, manual safety, and a loaded chamber indicator (LCI).

The G2c is a striker-fired polymer-framed pistol. With a barrel length of 3.20 inches, it is roughly the same size as the Glock43X. With ergonomics, this gun feels good in the hand, thanks to the stippled grip. Another plus is that it includes two magazines with finger extensions. 

One big reason the G2c became a favorite is the price. The standard models have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of just under $300 while stainless-steel versions are at just over $300. This makes it far more affordable than most other guns of the same size and caliber.

The Picatinny rail slot of the G2c is a nice touch. What better choice is there than to add a dependable laser sight? After all, the easier we aim, the better we shoot.
