The 4 Best Smith and Wesson SD40VE Accessories

Hunter Select Smith & Wesson Rail Adapter

Materials – This rail adapter for Smith and Wesson was originally designed for the Sigma series. However, it can easily attach to any .40 Smith and Wesson pistol, including the SD40 VE. The adapter features a construction built from glass-filled nylon, so it won’t shatter or crack after attaching lasers or tactical flashlights. Hunter also designed it with two pieces. You can easily screw these into place over the existing Picatinny accessory rail.

In addition, Huter includes the steel screws and necessary tooling for installation. The adapter increases your pistol’s rail to five slots, as opposed to the original two on the SD40 VE. This allows you to utilize any laser or light or to provide a more forward extension on your accessories.

Performance – If you’re looking for an inexpensive accessory to add to your Smith and Wesson, a rail adaptor is a great starting point. While the original accessory rail on your SD40 VE has a couple of Picatinny slots on it, there are some lasers and flashlights out there that require a little more. Even if that’s not the case, the extra slots provided by this adaptor allow you some forward extension.

Installing it over the existing rail is very easy, and the steel screws shouldn’t crack the glass-filled nylon. We personally aren’t huge fans of the adapter coming in two separate pieces. However, adding on an accessory should in theory help keep everything in place.

What we say – This is one of the best (and most affordable) Smith and Wesson SD40VE upgrades money can buy! It’s very simple, but it can open you up to many more accessory options.

Pros
  • Inexpensive choice
  • Mounts directly over existing rail
  • Increases Picatinny slots
Cons
  • Two-piece construction instead of one

AIM Sports Tactical 150 Lumen LED Flashlight

Materials – This tactical flashlight is housed in aircraft-grade aluminum. This has been anodized to resist dents, scratches, moisture, or air-born dirt. The light easily attaches to your S&W SD40 VE accessory rail, and it locks into place with a recoil-resistant bolt. No tooling is required – use your fingers to tighten the screws and lock the recoil bolt.

Easily switch the tactical light between any other pistols you may own with accessory rails. A single on and off switch is activated by pushing an ambidextrous button. The 150 lumen light source is powered by a USA Cree LED lightbulb.

Performance – Speaking of accessories to add to a Picatinny rail on a pistol, why not a flashlight? A 150-lumen flashlight is definitely not intended for any Military tactical-level operations, but this is a great choice for home and self-defense. It’s even a thoughtful accessory to consider for hunting if you need to navigate in any low-light areas.

The unique screws for installation are easy to use, and it’s nice that you don’t need to tool around with them. This means that if you happen to house your S&W SD40VE in a holster that doesn’t accommodate your rail space, you could easily attach the light in a few minutes when you need to. It’s also easy to switch between multiple pistols, giving you the most bang for your buck.

What we say – The AIM Sports 150 Lumen Flashlight is the best Smith and Wesson SD40VE accessory for gun owners looking for a versatile light that just needs to light the way on occasion.

Pros
  • Easy installation or removal
  • Low cost
  • Ambidextrous and easy power switch
Cons
  • No strobe mode for self-defense

Trinity Compact Red Pistol Laser Sight

Materials – The Trinity Compact Red Pistol Laser Sight is durable. The construction is quite simple, a hard-anodized aluminum body encasing a red laser. The design is inconspicuous and smooth, fitting underneath the barrel of your Smith and Wesson SD40VE. This laser sight weighs an ounce, measuring close to 1 inch in both height and length. This is for handguns with MIL-Spec Picatinny rails under the barrel. It can fit rails with lengths of at least 1.75 inches.

Performance – If you want to move away from fiber optic and tritium, this laser sight is for you. With a laser, you don’t need front and rear sights. Instead, you get one piece that fits underneath the barrel of your S&W SD40VE. This SD40VE sight allows for quick and easy target acquisition whether night or day. This dot sight can operate from 10°F to 130°F temperature.

Three AG-9 batteries power this laser, which are included upon purchase. The laser dot gets bigger at farther distances, from 5/16 of an inch at 7 yards to 3/4 of an inch when at 24 yards. This makes the sight easy to spot from afar.

What we say — The Trinity Compact laser sight is quick, easy, and efficient. It will mount easily on your SD40VE’s Picatinny rail. You can use it any time of the day in a wide range of temperatures. Since it runs on small batteries, you can carry several spare batteries effortlessly. This laser sight is also affordable and I’d say it’s a good deal.

Pros
  • Can be used day or night
  • Batteries are small and you can carry replacement ones easily
  • Single laser sight fits on a Picatinny rail
Cons
  • Not recommended for long-distance shooting

Trijicon Night Sight Sets for Smith & Wesson

Materials – The night sight sets from Trijicon include both a front and rear sight. The rear sight is U-notched with two dots. The sight is angled and serrated to reflect glare from your peripheral. Each dot is filled with a bright green tritium glass insert. The front sight is filled with a single tritium insert. It is also surrounded by a photoluminescent painted ring in bright orange. The orange ring provides high contrast for easy target acquisition. Have perfect accuracy during day or night. To install, you will either need a universal sight pusher or seek out a professional gunsmith.

Performance – We can’t talk about a self-defense pistol without a proper pair of night sights. The set offered by Trijicon is one of the best of the best, and the brand can accommodate just about any handgun you may own. Night sights are a more permanent upgrade, so you’ll need the help of a gunsmith, but you’ll be set to go after that. The high contrast between the green tritium insert and the painted orange dot makes it easy to focus on your target. The super visible colors can be seen during any time of day, so you can focus on what’s fifteen feet in front of you instead of the sight two feet from your face.

What we say – This is one of the best Smith and Wesson SD40VE upgrades for anyone with straight-up self-defense in mind. You can’t go wrong with a pair of night sights, and Trijicon produces one of the most popular options.

Pros
  • Contrasting Tritium and painted ring
  • Rear sight reflects glare
  • Tritium lasts years and is easy to replace
Cons
  • Need professional installation

Our Favorite Smith and Wesson SD40VE Accessory

For the Smith and Wesson SD40VE, our favorite accessory is the Trinity Compact Red Pistol Laser Sight. For one, it is one of the best accessories for the money. It offers a Class III red laser beam. While these are pretty easy to find for civilian pistols, you’re often paying over one hundred dollars or more for it. This option comes at a very affordable price, despite still being a fairly popular brand.

The housing for the laser is perfectly sound, and the whole construction is very lightweight and compact. The installation process is pretty basic, but you could use it on other pistols as well if you really wanted to. Although it will make the Picatinny slots on your pistol essentially useless, LaserMax makes up for it by including a rail under the laser. You can still add on a flashlight if you wanted to. This is a great option for anyone looking to upgrade their S&W SD40 VE.
