Almost everything about the Smith and Wesson SD40VE handgun has been designed with self defense in mind. From the slide serrations, to the trigger pull, to the ergonomic grip, the ultimate goal is fast target acquisition and a confident shot (or two). We’ve compiled a review of the best Smith and Wesson SD40VE accessories and upgrades, and we’ll choose our favorite of the four selected here.
Admittedly, simply searching for SD40VE accessories doesn’t give you a lot of options. Depending on what you’re looking for, searching for accessories for the Sigma series may give you some more choices to look at. However, even then, you still need to do some research to make sure you’re not wasting your money on something that won’t fit or work properly. That’s why we did the dirty work for you, and we sifted through all the internet has to offer for the SD40VE. While this handgun is designed with self defense in mind, many upgrade or accessories will suit tactical purposes as well.
Materials – This rail adapter for Smith and Wesson was originally designed for the Sigma series. However, it can easily attach to any .40 Smith and Wesson pistol, including the SD40 VE. The adapter is constructed from glass filled nylon, so it won’t shatter or crack after attaching lasers or tactical flashlights. It’s designed with two pieces, which can be screwed into place over the existing Picatinny accessory rail. Steel screws and necessary tooling for installation are included. The adapter increases your pistol’s rail to five slots, as opposed to the original two on the SD40 VE, allowing you to utilize any laser or light or to provide a more forward extension on your accessories.
Performance – If you’re looking for an inexpensive accessory to add to your Smith and Wesson, a rail adaptor is a great starting point. While the original accessory rail on your SD40 VE has a couple Picatinny slots on it, there are some lasers and flashlights out there that require a little more. Even if that’s not the case, the extra slots provided by this adaptor allow you some forward extension, if you’re interested in that. Installing it over the existing rail is very easy, and the steel screws shouldn’t crack the glass filled nylon. We personally aren’t huge fans if the adapter coming in two separate pieces, but adding on an accessory should in theory help keep everything in place.
What we say – This is one of the best (and most affordable) Smith and Wesson SD40VE upgrades money can buy! It’s very simple, but it can open you up to many more accessory options.
- Inexpensive choice
- Mounts directly over existing rail
- Increases Picatinny slots
- Two piece construction instead of one
- Fits Smith and Wesson Sigma
- Creates a 1.5 inch picatinny rail
- Mount LaserLyte Lasers
Materials – This tactical flashlight is housed in aircraft grade aluminum, which has been anodized to resist dents, scratches, moisture, or air born dirt. The light easily attaches to your S&W SD40 VE accessory rail, and it locks into place with a recoil resistant bolt. No tooling is required – use your fingers to tighten the screws and lock the recoil bolt. Easily switch the tactical light between any other pistols you may own with accessory rails. A single on and off switch is activated by pushing an ambidextrous button. The 150 lumen light source is powered by a USA Cree LED lightbulb.
Performance – Speaking of accessories to add to a Picatinny rail on a pistol, why not a flashlight? A 150 lumen flashlight is definitely not intended for any Military tactical-level operations, but this is a great choice for home and self defense. It’s even a thoughtful accessory to consider for hunting, if you need to navigate in any low light areas. The unique screws for installation are easy to use, and it’s nice that you don’t need to tool around with them. This means that if you happen to house your S&W SD40VE in a holster that doesn’t accommodate your rail space, you could easily attach the light in a few minutes when you need to. It’s also easy to switch between multiple pistols, giving you the most bang for your buck.
What we say – The AIM Sports 150 Lumen Flashlight is the best Smith and Wesson SD40VE accessory for gunowners looking for a versatile light that just needs to light the way on occasion.
- Easy installation or removal
- Low cost
- Ambidextrous and easy power switch
- No strobe mode for self defense
Materials – This laser attachment for your Smith and Wesson SD40VE attaches to the accessory rail under the barrel. The design includes an additional Picatinny rail with three slots, so you can add on a tactical flashlight if you wish. The red laser is a Class III product, which emits one of the most powerful beams allowed for civilian use: <5mw of power. The touch activation pads are oversized, so there’s no fumbling with fingers and losing precious moments. Switch between two laser beam modes: pulse or steady on. To preserve battery life, your LaserMax Spartan laser sight will automatically turn off after ten minutes of inactivity.
Performance – Perfect for both tactical or self defensive purposes, the laser sight from LaserMax is one of the best money can buy. No, unlike many other popular name brands, it doesn’t install over the trigger guard. We’re utilizing that accessory rail, and its compact size will hardly interfere with the right holster. You’re really getting a good bargain for the money here because it includes the strongest power of laser available to pistol accessories. Many other lasers with that level of quality are much more expensive. The mounting system requires you to use it with the rear end of your accessory rail, but it does feature additional Picatinny slots, so you can still add on lights as needed.
What we say – This LaserMax red laser is the best choice for those who need more target accuracy at night or would like a good bargain for their money on an accessory.
- Powerful Class III laser
- Small and compact
- Adds extra Picatinny slots on bottom
- Defeats use of original Picatinny slots on rail
- Advanced mounting technology provides the perfect fit
- Patented accessory rail permits attachment of tactical light
- Aiming point can be set to operator's choice of Pulse or steady
Materials – The night sight sets from Trijicon include both a front and rear sight. The rear sight is U-notched with two dots. The sight is angled and serrated to reflect glare from your peripheral. Each dot is filled with a bright green tritium glass insert. The front sight is filled with a single tritium insert, and it is surrounded by a photo luminescent painted ring in bright orange. The orange ring provides a high contrast for easy target acquisition. Have perfect accuracy during day or night. To install, you will either need a universal sight pusher or seek out a professional gun smith.
Performance – We can’t talk about a self defense pistol without a proper pair of night sights. The set offered by Trijicon is one of the best of the best, and the brand can accommodate just about any handgun you may own. Night sights are a more permanent upgrade, so you’ll need the help of a gunsmith, but you’ll be set to go after that. The high contrast between the green tritium insert and the painted orange dot make it easy to focus on your target. The super visible colors can be seen during any time of day, so you can focus on what’s fifteen feet in front of you instead of the sight two feet from your face.
What we say – This is one of the best Smith and Wesson SD40VE upgrades for anyone with straight up self defense in mind. You can’t go wrong with a pair of night sights, and Trijicon produces one of the most popular options.
- Contrasting tritium and painted ring
- Rear sight reflects glare
- Tritium lasts years and is easy to replace
- Need professional installation
- Orange front Outline
- Finish: matte black
- Professional installation recommended
Our Favorite Smith and Wesson SD40VE Accessory
For the Smith and Wesson SD40VE, our favorite accessory was the LaserMax SPR-R Spartan Laser Handgun Sight. For one, it is one of the best accessories for the money. It offers a Class III red laser beam. While these are pretty easy to find for civilian pistols, you’re often paying over one hundred dollars or more for it. This option comes at a very affordable price, despite still being a fairly popular brand. The housing for the laser is perfectly sound, and the whole construction is very lightweight and compact. The installation process is pretty basic, but you could use it on other pistols as well if you really wanted to. Although it will make the Picatinny slots on your pistol essentially useless, LaserMax makes up for it by including a rail under the laser. You can still add on a flashlight if you wanted to. This is a great option for anyone looking to upgrade their S&W SD40 VE.
