If you have a shotgun on hand for tactical or self defense purposes, you might have to use it in situations where the lighting is not on your side. An enemy invading your home is probably doing so at night, and a shotgun tactical light attached to your firearm can be a life saver.
A good light attachment should not only illuminate whichever area you’re in, but you should also be able to use it as a means to confuse or deter your opponent. Of course, you also need a tac light that won’t make your weapon too top-heavy or throw off your aim. You also want to make sure that the gun still fits your scabbard, in case you already own one.
We’ve compiled a list of the top 4 options available right now and we’ll let you know which we think is the best shotgun flashlight for the everyday, tactical shotgun owner.
Orion H40-W 500 LED Tactical Shotgun Flashlight
Materials – The Orion H40-W LED Tactical Shotgun Light is a sleek, all black, flashlight made of an aerospace aluminum body with a hard anodized finish. The flashlight’s lens has a harden treatment, and it’s standard waterproofed. The light strength is 500 lumens that can run for about 75 minutes straight. The light can reach up to 175 yards, and it only weighs about three and a half ounces (without the battery). The batteries are included. This tactical shotgun light has two light functions: a full strength light that stays on or a pressure switch that illuminates as needed. Orion also offers a one year warranty for any malfunctioning parts.
Performance – The Orion H40-W 500 LED Tactical Light is one of the best shotgun lights for anyone who requires durability for extreme or combat conditions. The body is very strong, and the waterproof features can really come in handy. We were a little surprised that the battery life seems fairly short compared to other flashlights we have tested; 75 continuous minutes doesn’t seem like very much, especially if you’re stuck in a bad situation. Although it can be used in home defense, there’s no strobing feature to fend off invaders.
What we say – We would definitely pick the Orion H40-W 500 LED shotgun flashlight for purely tactical purposes over home defense, but it would work for both. This flashlight costs about $60, which is a little on the high end, but it is extremely durable for a handful of purposes. We appreciate the addition of the pressure switch, which could be used to create a strobing defense light in emergency situations.
- Aerospace aluminum material
- 500 Lumens
- Higher price
- Not many lighting options
- Mostly for tactical, not defense

Streamlight High Lumen Rail Mounted Tactical Shotgun Light
Materials – The Streamlight 69269 TLR-1 High Lumen Shotgun Light is made of a 6000 series machine aircraft grade aluminum body in all black, and it has an anodized finish. The glass lens of the flashlight has been finished to withstand high temperatures from the 800 lumens light capability. It emits a concentrated beam that offers peripheral illumination, and it can be transferred and fitted to a variety of weapons. Streamlight also offers several varieties of shotgun tac lights for many needs, including models with green and red lasers, strobe lights, maximum brightness and maximum light range. A shotgun owner can choose whichever light suits his/her needs best.
Performance – There’s little to complain about the Streamlight Shotgun Light. The variety of shotgun tac lights offered is really nice, and the extra features don’t change the price, which really allows the buyer to only purchase exactly what they need. 800 lumens are also impressive, and it really illuminates a space with the peripheral light. The body is pretty durable, but there seems to be a lot of need for adjustments while switching between features on the flashlight.
What we say – We really like this flashlight, but it costs about $120 online – ouch! This is absolutely the best shotgun light for any gunowner who has the money, but that can also be the biggest drawback. The brightness and clarity of this flashlight can be incredibly useful and lifesaving. We say, if you have this amount of money for a shotgun accessory, you should invest it right here!
- 800 lumens
- Aircraft grade aluminum
- Variety of laser and strobe features
- High price
- Needs frequent adjustment
UTG Defender Flashlight for Shotguns
Materials – The UTG Defender Shotgun Lights are made of all black aluminum, and it mounts to Picatinny and Weaver rails. Its body is shaped so it can be attached to your shotgun or used for handheld purposes. The flashlight offers a 126 lumen output with a long lasting Xenon lightbulb. The front of the UTG shotgun lights are shaped in a way to be used for tactical or self defense purposes. There’s a pressure switch for using the flashlight only as needed, or there’s a twist-on option for long lasting light.
Performance – The UTG Defender Flashlight is the best shotgun light for such a low cost. There’s definitely some give and take with this light, but it gets the job done – even for home defense purposes. The lighting is really low compared to the other shotgun flashlights on this list, but not everyone needs a blinding bright light. It doesn’t have a strobe effect, but it does have a pressure switch, which can be used to create the same effect. We also appreciate that UTG made every part of the flashlight usable, and they created a self-defense front end over the light’s glass.
What we say – If you’re on a tight budget, the UTG Defender Shotgun Flashlight is a great choice for you; it only costs about $25, and it covers all of your basic tactical and defense needs. For such a low cost, though, you have to be willing to replace some parts: the lightbulb and batteries won’t last forever, and we’ve seen some complaints about the pressure switch malfunctioning early on. If you experience any problems, you won’t have to feel like you lost any money on the product.
- Very low cost
- Special self defense front end
- Pressure switch and twist-on light
- Cheap cost means cheap parts
- Pressure switch may malfunction
Windfire Cree XM-I T6 Tactical Shotgun Light
Materials – The Windfire Cree XM-I T6 Shotgun Tactical Light is an all black flashlight made of 6061T aluminum. It comes with an alloy metal rail mount that fits both Picatinny and Weaver style rails. The lightbulb in the flashlight can put out 1000 lumens of white light that can reach up to 110 yards. This tactical shotgun flashlight has two light modes: a pressure switch for light as needed and an on / off switch for long lasting light at the tail of the flashlight. The Windfire Cree XM-I T6 flashlight requires a chargeable 18650 lithium ion battery, but it is not included.
Performance – Compared to the UTG Defender flashlight, the Windfire Cree XM-I T6 Tactical Shotgun Flashlight offers far more light power for a similar price point. Again, we wish all of the flashlights came with a strobing effect (we really think that’s the optimal way to deter a predator in the dark), but this flashlight does illuminate very well. We also wish the battery actually came with the flashlight. We’d be willing to pay more money for it to come with the proper battery, since we’d still be saving some money in the end. Otherwise, there’s little to complain about this tactical shotgun flashlight.
What we say – The Windfire Cree XM-I T6 Tactical Light is a very good product for the money. It also costs around $25, but we just wish we didn’t have to make a second purchase for a battery. Altogether, this tactical light performs very well, even if it just covers the basics. Despite not having a lot of features, the white light shines very brightly, and it can reach a good distance for tactical situations.
- Low cost
- 1000 lumens of white light
- Up to 110 yards of light
- No battery included
- Basic functions
Our Top Pick
We would pick the Orion H40-W 500 LED Tactical Shotgun Light as the best shotgun flashlight within this review. Its price is right in the middle of the road, and it’s worth the cost for the amount of durability and function you get out of it. Some of the concerns with the cheaper tactical flashlights on this list were that the parts were cheaper and could malfunction or break, and we are not at all concerned with that issue coming from the Orion 500 LED Tactical Shotgun Light. The light power is very strong, so you should never worry about being lost in a dark situation. The pressure switch allows this flashlight to be used for both tactical and home defense purpose, so you should never need to purchase a second shotgun flashlight.
