Ranges - where to shoot:
I am looking for a good range in Northern CA that does'nt
make you fire from a bench, I am in Concord and it seems that all of the
local ranges are only 100-300 yards and utilize benches. Does anybody know
where such a range exists? Can anyone tell me why ranges even use benches?
(when are you going to fire from a bench while hunting or in any-other
situation)

Knightmare - As far as ranges in Northern CA go there used to be
a couple of military ranges in your AO I was familiar with. Mare Island
had a good known distance rifle range (600 yards). I know they shut a bunch
of it down so I don't know if the ranges are still open. Fort Ord and Camp
Roberts had/have ranges. I had heard that the National Guard had taken
over these posts. Call their Post operations office and inquire or call
any National Guard unit to find a point of contact. I shot a NRA highpower
match in Fresno once. It was a nice range but can't remember the gun club's
name. In short I would contact your NRA affiliated state rifle asscociation
and ask them. Our Mare Island shooting team used to make the rounds of
a couple of ranges in No Cal.

Concord Calif., about shooting ranges in No. Calif. Try the Folsom
Shooting Club (Sacramento Shooting Center), in Rancho Murieta Calif. That
is about 30 miles south east of Sacramento. It is one of the best ranges
period. Gooch I hate to bare the bad news but thouse great ranges at Mare
Island and Fort Ord are gone. A college has control of Ord and it is open
to LE but only out to about fifty yards. Yes Gooch I cry to, I have spent
many a day on the Sniper and National Match Courses at Ord.
Ryan The United Sportsman Club, in Concord is not the place to try
to learn this game. They have had rule changes that only allow shooting
from the bench or standing. No prone. Livermore allows all positions but
the 25yard berm is in the way if you shoot at either 100 or 200 yards.
Chabot is very nice and the 200 is open on Fridays for any position. The
100 is open Fri-Mon for any position. But Sacramento is the place to go.
You can shoot out to 1000 yards.

Mike: I've been to that 50 yard range at Ord, I watched an H&K
presentation there which was fun but you're right, there's not much you
can do at 50 yards with sniper rifles. They still have that incedible MOUT
training area there (LE only) but I suspect that they don't allow live
fire there except for simunitions, blanks and such.

Mr Stark. Clovis was the town with the range facility that I douldn't
remember a few days ago. There are a few Northern California guys on this
site that were looking for a good range. You got information on the 1000
yard range near Clovis? I shot an NRA match their once when I was stationed
in Vallejo. At least I think it was Clovis. It has been a while.

Does anyone have any information on any 1000 yard rifle ranges open
to the public?

I saw a question about 1000yd ranges open to the public, here is
an awnser you might try and as I wrote Pablito, try to find a small country
airport that has no traffic. The one I fly out of lets me use the runway
when no one is using it for its intended purpose. It's 4500ft long and
even has a wind sock to watch the wind.

Any of you that might be from Minneasota have any ideas where I
might find a range longer that 200 yds? I'm having a rough time of it,
and 200 is getting a bit boring!

Andre - Re: long range facility in MN. The only one I know of, and
I hear it's a good one, is located in Harris, about 30 - 40 miles North
of Minneapolis. I think it goes to 1000 yards, multiple target butts with
water pools in between so you can see where the flyers went. Run by a club
in Minneapolis or St. Paul and you do have to be a member. That's all I
know, and that's hearsay. Been meaning to investigate, but haven't gotten
around to it yet.
