Small base dies hold tighter body diameters than standard sizing dies and were originally made for semi-auto rifles. These lack the camming power of a bolt gun to either seat or extract slightly oversize ammo. If you're using a bolt gun, what small base dies will do is work the brass more than standard dies and contribute to slightly faster case failure. If your banger isn't choking on your current ammo, don't worry about small base dies.

Here's a formula for wind holds in mils, valid for 175 SMKs at 2650 or thereabouts:
yds(100s) * wind (mph)
hold (mils) = ----------------------------
constant
where constant is:
Range(yds) Constant
<=500 45
600 43
700 41
800 39
900 38
1000 37
I can do the math for that in my head.

The phrase "SAAMI SPEC" is tossed around shooting sites all the time by guys that have no Goddamned idea what they are talking about (WR Moore DOES!).
SAAMI spec is a large group of measurements and all of them have fairly large +/- factors, and there are NO SAAMI specs for loading dies.
The new case, as you buy it, is within +/- a goal diameter... then the chamber is +/- a design diameter... head space is +/- a given goal measurement.
So you throw smallish case in a largish chamber, and it goes BANG - now you have a largish case that fits the chamber - if it's a bolt gun, you can shoot this almost forever... if it's an auto, it might fit too tightly.
A FL die will NOT bring the case back to the new case size - it will reduce the case diameter a fair amount, but there will still be a bulge in the body over the web.
To bring it all the way down to the new case size (within a few thou), you need a small base die.
I have them for 223 and 308 (the cases that I get range pick ups for)... I small base size them the first time so they are starting from scratch.

I would guess that they're really handy for reloading .223 and .308 brass that was previously fired in a machine gun. That stuff tends to be on the largish size.

Personally, I prefer to avoid that kind of brass, because even if you can resize it successfully, the brass may have been weakened by the violent extraction. However, I'd have no problem with it if I were in turn going to fire it after reloading in a semi-auto and then discard it.

Welll sheeet.......
I reckon I'll pull the 2,000+ pieces of LC machine gun fired out again and smal base it. I plan on being able to use it for gas and bolts should the need arise so better to be safe than sorry. I've already done all the prep on it so I hopes this small basing doesn't screw with OAL or the shoulder set back too much. So the stratagy is that you do all your full length prep and then small base? I guess it's probably a good idea do small base all brass for gas guns, even non-military brass?

IMHO, if you don't know the pedrigree of the brass *and* plan on using it to feed a gas gun, better safe than sorry.
I take an intermediate approach for feeding gas guns. I headstamp sort the brass and adjust my dies to just the right cartridge headspace for the headstamp lot in conjunction with my chamber gage. I use a Wilson chamber gage to check full-length resized brass. I'm using Redding standard rifle dies with the carbide expander ball upgrade. That approach works the necks a bit more, but avoids having to match neck wall thickness to select bushing neck inserts.
Anything that doesn't pass I try resizing once more. If it still doesn't pass, it goes in the reject bucket. With the brass I have acquired to date, I don't get a lot of rejects for that reason, but you may be using brass that had a rougher ride...
If I was getting a lot of resizing rejects, I would probably switch to the small base dies.
I thought you (normally) used a small base die in place of the "normal" FL die, did I miss out on an important detail?
(Rework is another matter, of course).
I wouldn't be trimming cases by choice until I finished any sizing operations because it can shift the shoulder.

Easy way to look at the chamber/ammo situation is this. It's standard machining practice that holes (chamber) can be the nominal design size or larger (to either a specified or standard practices tolerance), never smaller. By the same token, whatever is being installed in the hole (ammunition) can be the nominal size or smaller (again to either a specified or standard practices tolerance), never larger.
If the ammo companies want to sell their products to a wide market, they have to be sure that all their 7.67 mm Eargesplittenloudenboomer ammo is gonna fit into any reasonably sized chamber. So, it's skinny and a bit short on headspace.
If the arms manufacturers want to make sure their products can use just about anyones ammo, their chambers aren't going to cut to nominal/minimum dimension.

Have you ever imbibed on the Mount Gay variety of dark rum? Not too shabby.
SAAMI basically sets out guidelines the cartridge/chamber should be to meet safety factors, but one problem with SAAMI is their list is very short. SAAMI is voluntary, manufacturers of ammo are not bound to conform though most try to stay within the limits for litigation purposes. As Lito said, it can be very vague territory calling out for std SAAMI or min SAAMI specs, though if I'm talking with Kiff and ask for a SAAMI std reamer he knows what I'm on about. Generally with minimum saami specs you're callin out for a smaller tolerance on the min side of the std spec, if I call for std it generally means keep the same tolerance as on the print, and try to stay middle of the road.
IMHO, the euro version CIP is a better compilation, vast number of cartridges included, plus often it states the pMax of each specific cartridge. Only problem is it's written in French.

Naive question here; Would standard .223 dies work as small base 5.56 Nato dies?
CDC'
Sunday, November 2, 2008, at 23:17:15 (ZULU)
I'm probably going to have to extract my foot from my mouth later, but here goes:
As I understand it, the primary difference in .223 Rem vs 5.56 NATO chambers has to do with the throat leade for the projectile, which can affect the pressure curve for ammunition / barrel.
As such, there should not be a die issue, but the projectile seating and max pressures can vary between the two chamberings.
I've used .223 Rem dies to load for a 5.56 NATO chamber, as I suspect many others do too. I don't recall any mainstream reloading die maker actually offering a 5.56 NATO die, so that may tell you something.

Just something that I noticed between those who are voting for McCain and those who are voting for obama. Those that vote for McCain take great pride in being Americans and understand the gift that we have and understands the sacrifice that needs to be given and those who don't, but vote for obama, take no pride in being an American nor do they understand what an American is yet would call you names or raise their voice and make accusations.
There really is a cultural war going on. What I find funny yet scary is that those who do vote for obama want to state what is fair, want everything to be fair, yet would not recognize nor understand what one does to become successful and here is the irony, they too want money and success, and when they do achieve, they will bitch when their hard earn money is taken for those who decide to be lazy and stupid. As for being fair, when everyone is equal and everyone is being fair who leads? We all know that answer. One last tag for this paragraph, I think liberals in some way are greedier than conservatives. We are happy at what we make and we just asked be be left alone and to give others a chance to be successful; liberals, they have to have an opinion on everything and a say on everyone.
One last item, those who don't understand how our government works, and who thinks that we are a democratic country should not vote for the simple reason of ignorance. If you can not pass your driver license written test then you can not drive, so why not have it for the presidential election.
End of rant....
Bolt, I voted via absentee ballot and I suspect many McCain supporter did also. My wife is voting for obama, she is going to wait in line - go figure - and she has an absentee ballot. What does that tell you about the liberal mind ;-)

My dealer just took receipt of some German milsurp 308, ~$450/K. Apparently the primers are 'staked', the ammo was originally for machine guns. Have any of you reworked/reloaded this type of ammo (with staked primers)?
My dealer also had a SIG-250, so I got to handle it. Nice ergonomics, felt great, mag release was ideal for me. This pistol has the nicest double-action trigger pull I can remember. But... I'm no expert on DAO. Just felt really good. They didn't have any cartridge conversion kits, but it looks like a promising pistola.

No problem, most mil-spec cartridge primers are staked or crimped in some fashion.
First time around, you use a swage or cutter to return the primer pocket to "normal" dimensions. I like the Dillon Super Swage 600 for that, but there are other tools too.
I've reloaded 9mmx19, 5.56 NATO and 7.62 NATO brass that was originally crimped.
The only other consideration is that mil-spec brass is a bit heavier, so you typically have to reduce power charges a bit if the load was developed in commercial brass.

Conventional wisdom is that you can't wear out carbide pistol dies.
How would you tell? Increased resizing force, dimension issues with resulting brass, what?
I tumble my brass, and clean out the dies on occasion. It seems like it takes more resizing force than it used to for my 9mmx19 on the same press. If I could reduce the resizing force w/o resorting to lube for the cases that would be nice.
Fired brass source/characteristics *is* a variable, so I have no standard to cross-check against the past. The Lee carbide die in question probably has been used for over 50K and maybe 100K rounds, but hasn't been dropped or obviously abused. Resized cases fit ok in a Wilson gage, as well as various chambers. No obvious scoring of the resized brass.
Cleaning the die interior makes no difference.
Ideas?

Your just getting weaker in your old age.... Try a bit of lube every now and then as you may have some small scratches on the carbide ring but I really doubt it. I've seen some carbide dies that have upwards of 4 million round through them and they just look "broke in ". You more than likely just have a stout ( thick ) bunch of brass or it's getting work hardened and is just stiff.
Hope this helps

Just re-read your post and all jokes aside I may see a clue to your problem... You say you my have upwards of 100k rounds sized on one press in one caliber .. That should come out to some where around 400k cycles of the press with that cartridge alone.. The increased resistance that you are getting may be due to worn pivot pins or wear in the ram.. Your press may be worn out... Take a good look at how everything acts under load..
Just some food for thought.

I tried the small base die on some of the LC machine gun brass that I had full length sized. Here are the befores and afters on one piece which were indicative of 4 more.
Original OAL 2.005
OAL after small base 2.090
Original shoulder setback -.003
Setback after small base +.002
Setback after FL sizing again -.002
Original case diameter at base .4695
Diameter after small base .4685
It looks like small basing only reduces the case by about .001, increases the length and the shoulder setback which will require full length sizing all over again. Is it worth it for .001?

I had a look at the carbide die, it has random small scratches at angles offset to the mouth (not exactly parallel). Probably just simpler to replace it, the sizer die by itself isn't that expensive. ($US26 as a part from Lee)
I tried it in a different single-stage press that reciprocates freely, resizing still seems stiffer that it should be.
My Loadmaster press is definitely stiffer in reciprocation that it should be (probably was much better when new). I could strip it and clean out the crud and inspect for wear in the pivots and replace as necessary, but I'm thinking that it may be easier just to replace the base unit instead. Only problem - Lee apparently doesn't sell just the press. I'll have to have a little chat with my preferred Canadian Lee reseller (Higginson Powders.)
I already wore out the shellplate carrier on this Lee Loadmaster and had to replace it, that takes a lot of cartridge cases to do that.

I'm happily using the Rem bulk .30 cal 165g PSPCL in my .30-06 Garand, suggest getting a sample and give them a spin for your .308 Win semi-auto application. They have just a small amount of lead exposed at the tip, so feeding should be pretty good. They have a cannelure, which makes for better retention during the feeding cycle. Pretty good accuracy too. The only real "negative" is that they are a flat-base projectile, but that's only important beyond say 300 yards.
Concur with your other parameter selections.
Perhaps just pick your tighest-chambered .308 Win (probably a match bolt gun) and see if the regular die sizes enough. It would be really rare for any semi-auto to be tighter than that. The resized case should just drop into the chamber without forcing.
I'm happy if the resized case fits properly into the Wilson cartridge gage, which is supposed to be on the "tight" part of the tolerance range.

-tax code shifts of wealth; welfare like never before to the bottom and a burden upon the burden for the producers
-grossly expanded entitlements at teh very time of grossly expanded applications for the "old" entitlements.

I don't have anything invested in Obama so I can't be as easily disappointed when he turns out to be the anti-American, leftist POS he has always been. I can still suffer from his leftist bullshit, but it won't be a total surprise to me.
Obama won bigtime last night and now he got HIS mandate, but can he actually satisfy the "down-trodden" voters that elected him? Will his plans backfire and cause a monumental shift of power in both houses of congress like Bill Clinton in 1994? Was the question of his citizenship finally answered sufficiently to quell further inquiries about his qualification to hold the office? Imagine if its now learned that he's not eligible to be President? Riots anyone? I know the folks in terror-sponsoring countries are rejoicing today but what about Israel? Whats on their mind?
I think its possible that the clintons are actually more disappointed than McCain about Obama's win last night. She's done now and so is McCain.

Joe - on the stamp act, the reason for the disportional response wasn't because of the stamp act itself.
Franklin wrote that none of the intolerable acts in and of themselves could have spurred the population to rebellion. He said his opinion was that NONE of the intolerable acts were the catalyst for the popular uprising. It was when England changed the fundimental economic system in the colonies (changing from Colonial Script to mandatory use of the British Pound) that the people rebelled. That, in combination with the intolerable acts, is what caused people to change teams in the middle of the game.
I'd say that we'd be in the same situation, but I didn't read about uprisings when fdr took us off the gold standard, or when Nixon took us off the silver standard.
The big question I have is whether this election cycle will be a learning experience or not. Hopefully the republicrat half of the new socialist order will understand that if they run an anti-constitution socialist in the future, people may not be able to differentiate between the republicrat anti-constitution socialist and the demopublican anti-constitution socialist.
The big question for me now is whether b. hussain ospama will effectively be compelled to disclose his official birth records. Since the lawsuit to compel has been blocked by the DNC this far, I kind of question it. The thing is, unless he chooses to do so, he's a pretender to the office, nothing other than a usurper according to the Constitution.
Some "documents manufacturer" in his camp better be working on some DANGED GOOD forgeries - and "elimination" of the originals.
For what it's worth, my little girlfriend up north says that orders outstripped production of the XCR by several weeks a couple of months ago. She said as of first thing this morning, orders have been rolling in non-stop, and haven't slowed down much at all. If you want an XCR, order it now, 'cause that way it MIGHT get to you some time in January or February.
Spare parts orders are backlogged too - seems smart people do things intelligently. If it weren't for the fact that I've already got my parts, mags, ammo, and XCRs, I'd be kicking myself ;-)

What do Abraham Lincoln, JFK, and Obama have in common? Nothing...Yet.
Barack Obama discovers a leak under his sink, so he calls Joe the Plumber to come and fix it.
Joe drives to Obama's house, which is located in a very nice neighborhood and where it's clear that all the residents make more than $250,000 per year.
Joe arrives and takes his tools into the house. Joe is led to the room that contains the leaky pipe under a sink. Joe assesses the problem and tells Obama, who is standing near the door, that it's an easy repair that will take less than 10 minutes.
Obama asks Joe how much it will cost.
Joe immediately says, '$9,500.'
'$9,500?' Obama asks, stunned. 'But you said it's an easy repair!'
'Yes, but what I do is charge a lot more to my clients who make more than $250,000 per year so I can fix the plumbing of everybody who makes less than that for free,' explains Joe. 'It's always been my philosophy. As a matter of fact, I lobbied government to pass this philosophy as law, and it did pass earlier this year, so now all plumbers have to do business this way. It's known as 'Joe's Fair Plumbing Act of 2008.' Surprised you haven't heard of it, senator.'
In spite of that, Obama tells Joe there's no way he's paying that much for a small plumbing repair, so Joe leaves.
Obama spends the next hour flipping through the phone book looking for another plumber, but he finds that all other plumbing businesses listed have gone out of business. Not wanting to pay Joe's price, Obama does nothing.
The leak under Obama's sink goes unrepaired for the next several days.
A week later the leak is so bad that Obama has had to put a bucket under the sink. The bucket fills up quickly and has to be emptied every hour, and there's a risk that the room will flood, so Obama calls Joe and pleads with him to return.
Joe goes back to Obama's house, looks at the leaky pipe, and says 'Let's see ˆ this will cost you about $21,000.'
'A few days ago you told me it would cost $9,500!' Obama quickly fires back.
Joe explains the reason for the dramatic increase. 'Well, because of the 'Joe's Fair Plumbing Act,' a lot of rich people are learning how to fix their own plumbing, so there are fewer of you paying for all the free plumbing I'm doing for the people who make less than $250,000. As a result, the rate I have to charge my wealthy paying customers rises every day.
'Not only that, but for some reason the demand for plumbing work from the group of people who get it for free has skyrocketed, and there's a long waiting list of those who need repairs. This has put a lot of my fellow plumbers out of business, and they're not being replaced ˆ nobody is going into the plumbing business because they know they won't make any money. I'm hurting now too ˆ all thanks to greedy rich people like you who won't pay their fair share.'
Obama tries to straighten out the plumber: 'Of course you're hurting, Joe! Don't you get it? If all the rich people learn how to fix their own plumbing and you refuse to charge the poorer people for your services, you'll be broke, and then what will you do?'
Joe immediately replies, 'Run for president, apparently.'

I did the same thing. To put it outright, here's my thesis statement:
Modern amirikan residents (not to be confused with the very small number of American Citizens left in this country) are corrupt, greedy, ignorant, apathetic, lazy, and don't have any sense of responsibility or duty.
We are reaping EXACTLY what Alexis de Toqueville said we'd reap, and for those exact same reasons he stated.
We've got an electorate composed essentially of 50 year old bodies housing 5 year old intelects. Except for those wonderful new 18 year old "first time" voters, who typically also have the intelect of a 5 year old, but know everything there is to know, and are happy to show all of the rest of us the error in our ways.
These people have no idea what their heiritage is, what their history says (and amazingly some misconstrued idea that if it hasn't happened in their lifetime, it not only never happened, but is impossible!), where they came from, or even the most basic principles of how our system of government was formed and how it was designed to function.
All they know is that their 401K statement last quarter "went bad". "Somebody" has to "do something". As CDC put it once, they know not whether they should be wringing their hands or wetting their beds.
If modern amirikan residents weren't that way, there would have been riots over the fdr and Nixon debacles. What we have now is a society filled with the idea of "entitlements" and "Rights" which are wholely unassociated with any responsibilities or duties.
If I had to come up with a slogan for amirika today, it'd be:
"I am excellent simply because I am alive and breathing - give me stuff".
The fact that they get the government they deserve doesn't bother me one iota. What DOES bother me is that WE get the government THEY deserve.
Our system of government derives its authority from the consent of the governed. If I've accidentally been ambiguous about my lack of consent before, now I'm putting it outright: until I see a birth certificate, the usurper holds NO authority.
The problem with our government today has nothing to do with people guarding Liberties with great jealousy, but rather the opposite - those that guard their Liberties with great jealousy are regarded as "tinfoil hat" fringe elements. People who don't know and don't care are raised as virtuous. Pathetic.
Let's just say that for the last 20 years, I've been "displeased" with the electorate. And my contempt has increased exponentially in the last decade.

"""EX POST FACTO CLAUSE - A misnomer in that actually two Constitutional clauses are involved. The U.S. Constitution's Article 1 Section 9, C.3 states: 'No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed,' and Section 10 says: 'No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law. . . .'
The 'words and the intent' of the Ex Post Facto Clause encompass '[e]very law that changes the punishment, and inflicts a greater punishment, than the law annexed to the crime, when committed.' Calder v. Bull, 3 U.S. (1 Dall.) 386, 390 (1798) (opinion of Chase, J.).
An ex post facto law is a law passed after the occurrence of an event or action which retrospectively changes the legal consequences of the event or action. """

Actually, no. The ONLY reason they did not include existing firearms in 1994 was to get the bill passed. They can pass a law that says after so many days you must turn in your firearms otherwise they become illegal. Just like they can ban certain pesticides, asbestos, and drugs from possession and use they can ban firearms from possession and use. So, you had best prepare from that day to come within the next few months. The Marxists in the Democratic party have a fool proof majority in Congress and a stated Marxist in the Whitehouse. What the Hell do you think the results of that fire and spark will be?

"A law implicates the Ex Post Facto Clause only if it criminalizes conduct that was not a crime when it was committed, increases the punishment for a crime beyond what it was at the time the act was committed, or deprives a person of a defense available at the time the act was committed. Collins v. Youngblood, 497 U.S. 37, 42-43 (1990). Courts have held that legislation may lawfully impose new requirements on convicted persons if the statute's 'overall design and effect' indicates a 'non-punitive intent.' United States v. Huss, 7 F.3d 1444, 1447 (9th Cir.'93)."
Actually, a lot of good law came out of that swamp...
Now, to criminalize an act yet to be commited; ie--spraying DDT on your crops--there is no trip here. The act of ownership, however, is far more problematic, and only more so when you consider interralted clauses and ammendments, or indeed--even the half-assed heller decision...and as I alluded to---most of our defenses against any such legislation that Jon made reference to will flow from the 9th Circuit...oh, the irony here:))

If "assault weapons" are banned, enhance skills with shotguns and lever-action rifles. (I have a Marlin 1894S chambered in .44 Remington Magnum, which I bought because of the last "assault weapon" ban. It has a 10-shot tube, and makes a great car gun.)
If semi-auto pistols are banned, get a Jerry Miculek video and bone up on revolver techniques.
However, remain calm, and recall what happened when Bill and Hillary talked about nationalizing health care. The country cried, "Stop!", and we got a Republican Congress in 1994.
And more states than ever before allow their citizens to carry concealed weapons.
The country swings like a pendelum, and right now, we're in a leftward swing. It will swing back the other way. More than 56 million Americans voted in opposition to the President-elect. You can be sure that he will remember that, even if Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid aren't smart enough to.

A for the nation taking a leftward swing: No; I do not think so. I think the voters took a swing awright--but it was against Bush more so than for Obama. Bush will be vindicated largely by history some 50 years hence, but for the here and now thee is no denying he could not sell ice water in hell, let alone a war to the American people. He had the easiest of mnadates to use (9/11), but his inability to talk it was a disaster---one that, largely, brought us here to this place.
That all said, I think the left has the perfect agent in pace now---and it is worse than anyone here imagines yet. Critics will be "racist" by a fawning media's decree; the chosen one will orate and all will fall behind his schemes; congressional oppositon is not even a speed bump...and the damage is done imediately once the checks go out. Going back is no longer an option. Think of it this way: With jusy barely 40% of us not paying a cent in income taxes, and some 30-odd% getting back something more than they give already--we have close elections. Now, imagine over 50% not paying a damned thing AND getting a check any damned way from the IRS...can you see future campaigns??? "Vote for the repub, and he will take away your rebate checks..." I rather doubt we will see any rightward swing from the ballot box...ever. The voters have, as Bravo said, gone De Toqueville on us...and the trap is about to slam shut on them...
After Tuesday, I began praying for justice Kennedy's good health...and four other black robed constructionalists too. Can you believe that???? Kennedy??? Wow. To see this clown as a necessary evil is to truly know the damage this election may have wrought.
Hank: Huge legal differences between ownership issues and acts yet to be committed (usage of banned substances AFTER law changes)...very huge. Not insurmoutnable by a determined foe like Pelosi and her gang of idiots--but certainly one that requires a constitutional crisis resolution to get passed. I want the constitution front and center of all such liberal BS proposals; for if it is to die--I want it to be quick and in the public's eye. I have my reasons...and these are all psychological. Let events shape man, than man can shape events...

I may be treading on thin ice here.
IMO, and looking at the broader context, some skinhead getting lucky would be the WORST thing that could happen. Obama can and by all indications, he WILL do some damage to the traditional American way of life, no question.
However, race relations in this country are not good. I spend time in the cities of Milwaukee and Chicago, I blog, I read. I was part of the original wave of school integration as a child. My mom was a liberal activist and worked with Father James Groppi in the 70s. While there are still pockets of white people that are extremely prejudiced, white people overwhelmingly proved on Nov. 4th that by and large, racism by white people is rapidly headed toward the door.
Blacks, on the other hand, still nurture a fundamental hate of white people. (The exception to this are the ones that other blacks call "Uncle Tom") Black culture is pretty self destructive, and their society remains a generally underachieving sort. Whitey is still a boogeyman and excuse that even their churches use to this day to rationalize why a large portion of inner city black culture remains unsuccessful. Again, the election demographics prove this....94% of blacks voted for Obama, and by all accounts none of them are shy about admitting that they voted for him BECAUSE HE IS BLACK. If that isn't racist, I don't know what is.
If Obama gets whacked, it would light the fuse on a very large powder keg and permanently damage any chance at mutual acceptance by whites and blacks.
This is one area of American society that Obama is truly in a position to make strides in, if he handles it right. I am hopeful he is smart enough to see that this is the one area that he could truly make a positive and historical impact on our beloved country.

I doubt that they will succeed in taking over existing 401(K) plans, because if they try that, before the bill takes effect, everyone who has a 401(K) plan will do exactly what I will do if they try. I will withdraw all of the money from the plan, and close it.
That will mean taking a big tax hit. It will also mean a stock market crash as people have to sell off the assets in those plans.

Fuck 'em. If they wanna get shot while rioting and looting, so be it. We just need some public officials with the balls to declare martial law when the folks in the 'hood decide they're gonna take over; They don't own anything, are eiter on public assistance, or make their money illegally, and never pay for the damages they cause when they decide to riot over their football hero being arrested, the home team losing(or winning), a rapper being caught videoing himself molesting children, etc.. By rioting in support of that type of behavior, they're voicing their approval of it, and identifying themselves as people that need to be culled from society.

I've discovered part of my Lee Loadmaster problem that I discussed earlier.
With all the operating levers disconnected and the parts cleaned and lubed, the upper part of the ram tube reciprocates freely, while the lower portion strongly binds.
Once I detail stripped the ram assembly, discovered there are dents on the lower part of the tube, I'll try stoning/smoothing and see if that helps.
Replacement ram is $10 plus shipping, will order one if necessary.

I've already ordered a replacement carbide sizing die.

Bork shared a story, where he was at a conference where several professors of constitutional law were in attendance. He had a conversation with a Harvard professor, who said [sic] "I don't understand why you think the constitution is/has a legal foundation/basis." or something like that.
Bork's dialogue was brilliant, but I'm afraid he's not long for this world. I didn't recognize him, without the caption indicating who he was.
I'm getting old. I should be catting around on Saturday nights, instead of watching Judicial/Political analysis on C-Span.

Duman, I was still a kid with ambitions when Bork got "Borked." I thought he was the most brillieant legal scholar of his time, and when he was railroaded off the nomination....that was the crux event in how I view this country's future. It woke my ass up. It got me to think---lotsa thought--about the implication of our handing the societal leaches the keys to our national bloodbank. Bork was my very first "good God!...we are screwed..." moments in life. Sad day...

Philosophicize (?) and reminisce with me for a moment. Issues, and issues of the day. What is first and foremost on your mind, and your largest worry. Also, what are you happy about the most. All that stuff that is spinning around up there.
Now, for the moment, let me just say one word.
CHILE
I don't know what it does for you, but for me, it reminds me of a time when things were different. Priorities were different. So were the goals. Worries existed, but for other reasons. And yet, there was also that same old controversy of how it is properly spelled.
I say this out of the utmost of respect. And dignity. Just a reminder of where we have been, and where we are going. In such a short time. Yet seems so long, as well.
What is next, around the corner? Aside from that, forget for a moment the 'what need I prepare for'. How about a "Revel in what we have" moment.
I'm not saying to give up, or anything like that. Not at all. I'm only saying to stand solidly where you are, and appreciate what you have, in all things.
Reminisce, value, cherish. Better grounding, so to speak.
I understand that there are some who won't have a clue of what I'm talking about. I accept that. I also know that there will be many who do. I'm not sitting atop a mountain, or anything profound like that. I'm just trying to bolster what is real, and what exists.
It wasn't that long ago, when things were totally different, was it? Sure, I've made a few jokes about the latest changes. I'm not joking about this though. That one word does it for me. Because there is so much connected to it. I pray that it works for you, too.
Philosophy session over, back to the regularly scheduled politics and stuff.

The Forrest Gump Perspective on the Financial Crisis
Mortgage Backed Securities are like boxes of chocolates. Criminals on Wall Street stole a few chocolates from the boxes and replaced them with turds. Their criminal buddies at Standard & Poor rated these boxes AAA Investment Grade chocolates. These boxes were then sold all over the world to investors. Eventually somebody bites into a turd and discovers the crime. Suddenly nobody trusts American chocolates anymore worldwide.
Hank Paulson now wants the American taxpayers to buy up and hold all these boxes of turd-infested chocolates for $700 billion dollars until the market for turds returns to normal. Meanwhile, Hank's buddies, the Wall Street criminals who stole all the good chocolates are not being investigated, arrested, or indicted.
Mama always said: 'Sniff the chocolate s first, Forrest'.
Quote of the day from a fund manager:
'This is worse than a divorce... I've lost half of my net worth and I still have my wife..'
The bailout, a different perspective
Back in 1990, the Government seized the Mustang Ranch brothel in Nevada for tax evasion and, as required by law, tried to run it. They failed and it closed. Now we are trusting the economy of our country to a pack of nit-wits who couldn't make money running a whore house and selling booze?

I was just busy w/ kids, the Rover, work.... wasn't getting *any* trigger time.
But, the other day..... well, a couple of weeks before the election....
I have to admit, maybe my perspective is skewed being in East TN, but, this is McCain country, I just kinda thought, surely everyone isn't really having the wool pulled over their eyes..... well, I was proven wrong..... :(
But before the election, I was at a buddy's shop, had just popped in to say hi, and he dragged my back to his office to show me what he'd just gotten, an nice RRA M4.... and, it was like someone set a bell down over my head and started ringing on it hard...... I kinda had that feelin' that, to borrow a line from one of my favorite songs, "And then one day you find ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun"....
So..... I've got the ol' Rover runnin' again, one kid's off to college now, it's time to see if I can remember anything about which end of a rifle the round comes out of..... lol.......
A couple of other things I've seen that bother me......
Not like we didn't know it was coming, but......
If you go to : http://change.gov/agenda/urbanpolicy you'll probably find that page pulled. But if you google it and call up the cached version of it, you will find this statement in there : "Address Gun Violence in Cities: As president, Barack Obama would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals who shouldn't have them. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent, as such weapons belong on foreign battlefields and not on our streets.
Now, if I can find the video over on youtube again, of O wanting to start a civilian defense force....

I was given a 22 autoloader rifle this weekend. I have no idea who made it. I'll discribe it the best i can. 22 cal. loads through the stock. The stock is two pieces. The 2 pieces are joined with a 1 inch steel band at the front sling swivel. The stock goes to about 1 inch of the end of the barrel The stock also has a cheek piece. There are no markings on the gun except a B on the right side of the barrel. It has a Weaver G8 scope that says patent ped. Elpaso TX.
If any of you are interested i could E-Mail a picture. She's a little rusty, but i need a winter project any way.

Where are we going to be? Things were a lot different back then. To get people to focus on that perspective, I couldn't think of a better waypoint, or milestone, than that great man.
Perspective, and respect. That's all I'm trying to bring out. I truly was hoping for more than one to 'know' of what I was speaking.
As to shooting, I'm proud to say that we feel that we have the most armed church in the province, and possibly the country! (pun intended) We have a hunting group, and another member just went and picked up a reloading outfit this past thursday. Then he brings it to my door, to show him how to do it all. Bringing another into the fold!
It seems, that all my talk of the 'long range precision' has bitten others, and is expanding their ideas of what's possible. I'm just keeping at it. And at the range, we play our own type of golf. ;) ;))

"If" Obama has Islamic ties and has proposed support to the Palestinians, but then claims to be a "Christian", would that not be cause for a "fatwa"(sp) against him? Gotta get a new one, probably here in a week or so. I'm not paying the "new" prices.
If you need to get ahold of me, I'll start checking the home e-mail more regularly. Don't be afraid to call me at work, or use the work e-mail addy either.
Worst case is I'll say "there's an explosion, gotta go" ;-)
I'm hoping I can find the little disk with the back-up done a year or so ago. Elsewise, all those phone numbers, addresses, etc are "lost". Some great good friends in there, I never could bring myself to delete.....
And yes, Bruce was among those. I still miss Bruce.
As for "panic buying", I've got a question for you. How long have I been preaching "beans, bullets, and bandaids"? I'll keep on doing what I've been doing for years now...... but the tinfoil hat doesn't appear so odd any more, eh?
And yes, I miss being able to get chile that doesn't taste like red cardboard.
Assuming that nobody cares about ospama not proving proof that he's Constitutionally able to accept the presidency (he hasn't yet provided a certificate of live birth showing that he's a native born citizen), we're going to be in for a long dry spell.
Or as I call it, the end of the Republic as we know it.
And I feel fine. (apologies to REM)
At this point, remember that the president doesn't have much in the way of Constitutional authority. Nevermind the "executive orders" which have no Constitutional backing - the real power lies with congress.
If you haven't hounded your congresscritters in a while, remind them that you're still here. Remind them that you're watching their EVERY vote, now that things have gone wonky. And remind them that if they vote contrary to what you prefer, there are a goodly amount of disenfranchised voters that would love to sign a recall petition. They might not lose the seat, but they surely will have to pay for it - and in the PRK, that meant a loss in the next election cycle! Mostly though, remind them that if certain legislation passes - and you don't read about THEM PERSONALLY leading the effort for fillibuster - you're going to HOLD THEM PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE.
Classic carrot and stick.

Thanks for the info. I'll be the first to plead ignorance to the Islamic situation.
On another note- "The Global Poverty Act" that I'm sure has been mentioned before, could be ratified by the senate, as has already been passed by the house, if I'm not mistaken, has attached to it a ban on all small arms. This attachment comes by way of alignement with U.N. international law. If this is the case, would this render the 2nd Amendment moot and allow these nuckle heads to circumvent the 2nd Amendment?

Time to go back to the basics... As Mao said " all power comes form the barrel of a gun". True enough if you mean all force. But where doe's the moral authority come from ? "We the people" derive our political authority from "the laws of Nature and of Nature's God" So the supreme earthly power to be armed is ours..
Sure you can abdicate your rights as a citizen and give up the tools to protect you and your family but morally, a 'right' can never be taken away, only surrendered. The choice is yours as to what you do..
Now as to the future of such things... I'll throw out my thoughts for you to ponder.. There won't dump trucks running around collecting guns ( just yet ) but the powers that be will do stuff like deny your drivers license or deny you home owner's insurance so you can't get a loan. Maybe even deny your children medical aid as they live in a house 'with guns' and it's 'to dangerous'. They will enlist armies of Oprahs to tell us and our spouses ' what's good for us'.... Oh and maybe just for kicks they will offer a 50 dollar food chit per gun for who ever turns in their neighbor........ Just my ramblings...

I don't get it either.
I know a woman that voted for Obama. College edjamakated, works in an "intelligent" environment... We have been chatting via e-mail, and:
She is totally unaware of the schism between Michelle and Hillary.
She is totally unaware of the racist remarks made by Hillary about Ghandi working in a 7-11.
She is totally unaware of the past with Obama, id est - Bill Ayers, Rev Wright, Acorn, yadda, yadda, yadda.
She knows nothing about the plan to absorb 401k's into SSI. She thinks that he won't raise her taxes - directly or indirectly.
She thinks the country can go completely green in 2 to 3 years (no oil or fossil fuel products).
She has no idea where electricity comes from. When told that it comes 60% from coal, she said we can dam the rivers and shut down the all of the coal mines.
I could go on for about 8 pages.
To say I was shocked at her lack of knowledge about how the world works would be the understatement of the year.
But what it DID bring home to me was what a piss-poor job the news media is doing to inform the public - media news is now just entertainment.

If it's "just" the battery, you may be able to purchase a replacement, which would at least allow you to retrieve the number data.
These folks have good prices and service:
http://www.wirelessgalaxy.com/
There is software (which some cell carriers will also offer as a service) for transferring address book data from/to cell phones for backup and update purposes. This is really handy for non-SIM card equipped phones. You'll need a compatible cable and access to a working PC configuration that supports your transfer software.
I'm using the Data Pilot software for that usage.
http://www.datapilot.com/
Datapilot sells cables too.
As a general note, I recommend such software for any cell phone user. It permits making periodic backups of the address book, which helps takes a lot of the pain out of loss, destruction or terminal failure of a cell phone.
