Leupold 12-40X60 Variable Spotting Scope

Leupold (pronounced Loo-pold [in German, maybe Loy-puld]) 12-40X60 Variable Spotting Scope

As you would expect from any good optical device, the Leupold Spotting Scope is bright, clear, and sharp. It is adorned in a handsome, black, armor coating on top a magnesium-alloy body. The focus ring is right in front of the eye, with the power ring right in front of that. There is a tripod mount on the very bottom of the monocular which is imperative for any high power optic. Without the use of a good tripod, the user will be unable to hold things still, which will make it impossible to see a good level of detail.

Leupold makes a tripod which tucks away into a pouch the size of one of the legs of the tripod. This is possible because each of the three legs is of a different diameter. The tripod head is attached to the largest of the three legs. This leg also serves as the lock for the head. The entire leg rotates to lock or unlock the head. The medium leg slides into the large leg and then screws in, to secure it. The third and smallest leg then fits into the other two legs and also screws into place (in use the two smallest legs screw into the head). The price for this niftiest of devices is around $60, I think. The size and weight are right for putting in the field pack.

There really isn't a lot to say about this spotting scope. The focus and power rings are smooth and positive in their operation. The optics are great quality. The scope is durable (of course, glass can always be scratched). The eyecup works very well if you wear glasses and it works just as well if you don't have need of artificial correction for the old eyeballs. Seeing 30 caliber bullet holes at 200 yards is easy as well as is seeing the activity of people hundreds of yards more distant. The scope is also available with a mil-dot reticle.

I paid around $550 for my scope and it has been worth every penny. You can't beat a great set of optics!
